I'll ask the curator when I meet him next time as these below are my own conclusions.
2241 k31/42 and K31/43 rifles were made as you said and the production ending was ordered at the first of July 1944 but there were still 205 rifles delivered in 1946 and that is all according to the books but....
Assuming that they started at # 450001 it is weird that the top serial of the k31/43 known is # 452326
(in the blue Repetiergewehre book page 187 and page 54 in part 4) so 2326 guns for both types.
I made notes of about 50 K31 snipers that passed my hands and eyes in the past years and this is what came out...
K31/42 ; highest serial is # 451099 and all below that serial are K31/42's. (one # 450523 was slightly different and was offered as a prototype but I have my doubts about that one).
K31/43 ; lowest serial # 451243 all past this serial are K31/43's till at least # 452326 so we are talking of at least 1083 K31/43's
So in my opinion the change of k31/42 to K31/43 must have been somewhere between the two serials as mentioned above.
Another interesting detail is that the highest serial K31/43 known so far is that # 452326 and the lowest K31 sniper I know of with a detacheable scope has the serial # 452329 so whe can be pretty sure that that # 452326 was one of the last K31/43's.
Sure some interesting things to discuss with that curator of the museum.
Thanks,
Guisan.
