Whilst still at the Fair

Post by Aughnanure » Sat Feb 20, 2010 10:59 pm

I had a look at this
Double Trigger, 5 shot, .450 inch, Tranter
Double Trigger, 5 shot, .450 inch, Tranter
The safety seemed to be the only bit missing from the pistol but the bullet mould wasn't there ("You can easily pick one up at an Arms Fair".... well, thinks I, why don't you?).
The case was a good reproduction "It's in a nice case. . ." Which was true but not entirely accurate :!:
Unfortunately the lid had screws holding the top onto the sides, which rather detracted fron the authenticity.
The gun appeared to have been chemically reblackened, which was a bit of a giveaway as Tranters had a highly polished 'electric' blue finish usually and the pits were not the same colour as the surface ! !

Asking price $A2,800; again I won't charge any commission, friends are friends after all. The same dealer had a battered .36" 5 shot, percussion Colt at $A1,400 (looked like a well used Uberti
a percussion 'Scottish' pistol, this was a cheap metal stocked Birmingham product and was as close to being a Scottish pistol as Birmingham is to being Dingwall (look it up) $A1,200.
He also had a "...genuine, original, leather, Colt 1911, US Government issue holster" and only$A250.

I just love Antique Fairs, I'd love to go to one but Fairs never last long enough to be antique

Robert,

I'm afraid that I'm not really familiar with Dingwall but my g-g-grandmother, Catherine Dallas, came from there when she married Tom Gollan and started a tribe that migrated to Australia and 'went forth and multiplied'. I've been there on Google Earth but never in person. My other Scots ancestors, who also came out here were, John Campbell and Mary McArthur who also started a numerous tribe, they hailed from 'the Braes of Lochaber'.
