New No.4 Maltby for me

Post by Kevan9mm » Thu May 12, 2005 1:17 am

Picked up a 1943 Maltby today, serial number AT1843x. Excellent condition. Wood is excellent-plus, a light brown with nice grain. Metal finish almost 100%. Bolt matches. Bore is two-groove and also excellent. I am very pleased with this rifle. What can anyone tell me about Maltby?

ROF Maltby was in South Yorkshire near Sheffield, it came into operation producing No4s in mid 1940, its main function seems to have been assembling rifles from sub contractors parts although it did have some manufacturing capacity, Skennerton says it was referred to as "the pool".

The two groove barrel is interesting, what marks are on it and anychance of some pictures?

And of course let us know how it shoots. :D;

I had a look at a 1941 Maltby No4 Mk1 about three months ago. It was as built, no FTR or anything and with a nice shiney 2 groove barrel. It had seen use but was described as a 'good honest rifle' by the chap who had it. My FAC is away at the momemt having two .303 slots and a .22RF slot added. One .303 slot is for a Long Lee that I am trying to obtain from a fellow club member. I am tempted to use the other for the Maltby if he still has it. I will find out at the end of the month.

Regards

Peter.

Kevan, Maltby manufactured action-bodies, bolts/boltheads and barrels, everything else were sub-contractor parts. Using my two '43s as an example your '43 won't show the finest of metal work, but should shoot very well.

Peter, Browse back, or search for my userid as I'd posted about my '41 Maltby and we had a lively discussion. I must admit I'm a Maltby fan...I hope you decide to buy it. And then we can do a 'stare-and-compare'.
