Peep sights-anybody else like me?

Post by Krull » Tue Jan 26, 2010 9:17 pm

I've heard about how peep sights are all the rage since I was a kid but I just can't shoot them that well,on an old MkIV I had I do ok with the long range peep but the big-arsed one for close shooting is a joke, when I get done it looks like you went at it with a shotgun :loco:

The only peep I ever did ok with was the one on the AR,but the .223 isn't a cal I'd like to depend on in the woods.

The sights I do best with are the ones you find on AK's,SKS's and the like.

You have to remember that these are Military sights and the larger aperture is for a man size target at 300 yards. I had a double 'peep' sight on my SLR and found it excellent for all types of battle shooting.

I like the peep sights. The large aperture should be sighted so that the outside ring disappears as the true sight picture is obtained. The narrow aperture works like the pinhole camera. It narrows the sight angle and affords a natural deep depth of field view.

Us old guys like peep sights....most of us, anyway.

Yup, i like a rear aperture too, only problem is most of my milsurps are vee & post.

Mojo's not an option btw,

I can shoot Open sights well, but not w/o effort

The US Civilian Marksmanship Program runs a number of matches that reward those who can shoot Open (non-aperture rear) sights. The CMP .22 Sporter match and the Vintage Military match are those I refer to.

Careful blackening of the rear and front sight, and being able to see the front sight seem to me to be the keys to being able to shoot Open sights well. If one is older than age 30, seeing the front sight will probably require Optometrist intervention. For the typical sharp-tipped Mauser front sight, Divine intervention is necessary.

If that large ring is for man-sized targets at 300 you're better off giving me a bazooka! I do better with the smaller peep sights-but it's odd on a MkIV I do just "ok" with it,but with the carbine AR I had I did best~weird :?:

I do best with the "vee & post" then anything,I'm 34 now but still shoot them just fine.....

I have Mojo sets on a M91/30, M38 and a Turk KKale. They work for me very well at 100 meters.
On an AR I have the rear issue peep teamed with A KNS Precision globe crosshair on the front instead of the usual post. I like that setup as well.

Being an older shooter with not so great eyesight it basically is Peep sights when I shoot. I shoot in CMP Vintage rifle matches usually with a P-14 or No4MK1 and am still competative. I recently got a MAS36 and I love its sights, just need to get the correct rear leaf I'm not to thrilled with the Kentucky windage thing. :TX:

im like you , cant make the peep work any better than the knife and notch of the early rifles , but its all my eyes these days , in time past it worked much better , im more inclined to a nice piece of glass now with a sharp cross hair , :SCO:
