#1 MK3 price check.

Post by aprayinbear » Thu Dec 16, 2010 1:13 pm

Fair Price?

I'm considering a #1 MK 3 SMLE. It's a BSA 1917 . Many, but not all parts match. I looked down the bore yesterday. Lots of cosmoline and gunk, but the rifling looks sharp. The stock is in what I'd call vg condition with the brass disc intact. Looks like the original stock to me.

The dealer is asking $275. I think he'll probably take $275 out the door. What do you guys think..... fair price?

I've been torn between this rifle and a Swiss K31. I'm starting to lean toward the SMLE...... sure feels good in my hands and I think the bore will prove to be in great shape once it's scrubbed. I'm looking for a good shooter that I can reload for.

Deal or No Deal? :?: :AUS: :GBR: :FRA: :NZ: :IRE: :SCO: :USA: :SWI: :NET:

Sounds like a deal to me but I am in the UK and everything costs more here than the USA.

Regards
Peter.

Now days it is hard to say what is a fair price. But I'd think that is still on the high side. My last 1MKIII purchase was in 2005 and it was a Lithgow, in great condition and with a bayonet for a total of $132.95 including shipping. I've seen various Enfield 1MkIII's at gun shows, that weren't drill purpose, from $175 to $250...asking...... in recent times. I'd offer $200, or less, and see if he balks or speaks up with a counter offer if you start to walk away.

That disk on the butt...anything marked on it? If it has a unit marking that is a plus, I've got one with a unit disk that's actually blank, maybe from some long stint in some warehouse in some small country. Take a look at the receiver and see if there is an import mark and who imported it and how big the marks are. Later Century imports have the big gaudy marks that detract from the rifle.

a 1917 BSA would be a mkIII* , i think it an OK price if its in the condition to warrant it , but without photos its hard to tell

In Australia it would be a fair price although prices are creeping up. A good bore would make it a good but not outstanding deal.
The power of accurate observation is frequently called cynicism by those who don't have it.
