The man-of-war (also man of war, man o'war or simply man) was the most powerful type of armed ship from the 16th to the 19th centuries. The term often refers to a ship armed with cannon and propelled primarily by sails, as opposed to a galley which is propelled primarily by oars. The man-of-war was developed in England in the early 16th century from earlier roundships with the addition of a second mast to form the carrack (a type of ship used by the English in the 16th century). The 16th century saw the carrack evolve into the galleon and then the ship of the line.
I had a captain on my second ship, who always referred to warships as 'Men of Fight'. Merchant ships used to dip their ensigns to warships who should have return the complement although I suppose in this day and age it probably only happens is the two ships are of the same country. I remember that it was the cadets job to leg it aft and dip the ensign and it's a job I have done many times.

USS Mississippi was originally BB-41 until 1946 when converted to a test ship and redesignated AG-128.
