Omaha Sherman

Been working on some mono images recently and thought this turned out quite well.



I think this is an M4A3E8(76)W "Easy Eight"

My father, who served in the Royal Tank Regiment during the War said they were known to the troops as 'Ronson's' because they lit up every time they were hit!

I do believe the Germans named the Sherman the "Tommy Cooker" for that very reason Duncan.

That is not the whole story: first the US and British Empire Forces realized they needed tanks in numbers and they would be produced in the US and UK and need to be delivered via ship, not road or rail like the German behemoths. Second, the Sherman was produced in superior numbers and was only at a disadvantage if firing on the front glacis of a German Panther or Tiger. If a Tiger or Panther was caught by the side or rear it was dead meat to a Sherman's 75MM or if the Sherman hit the turret with the thin 2 inch thick armor. Other than a long range frontal assault, the Sherman could defeat the German tanks and if it was a 17 pounder or 76 mm US gun, at much longer range. US and UK tank destoyers with 17 pounder or 90mm guns could defeat any German armor at reasonable range even at the frontal glacis. Later the US Pershing and UK Comet tanks could go toe to toe with the German heavy tanks no problem.
