well, it looks like the chin strap is undone - are the helmets usually that loose?

The patch on his sleeve is the 25th Inf Div, my old Hawaii unit.
We used to fire the 105s in Nam, off and on all night wearing nothing but cut-off fatigues (shorts), boots, (but usually flip-flops), and a OD towel around our neck (which had nothing to do with HH Guide to the Galaxy). :mrgreen:
Although they did make us wear long pants and boots during the day, in case a big shot came around, but still no shirts or helmets.
Just look at all the gear they are wearing in that photo. :shock:

Looks like they all have flack jackets ...or the modern version ...all zipped up too. Maybe it's cold where they are. Back in the time and place Vern is talking about the infantry would only wear flack jackets in the field when directly ordered to, and none of them were zipped up either because it was hot enough already to get a heat stroke without any jacket. I don't think I ever saw an arty guy on a firebase with a flack jacket. And helmets with the chin strap fastened? I think only airborne troops in movies fastened the chin strap when jumping out of planes.
