Very sucessful Scout shooting camp

Post by Brass Rat » Tue Apr 03, 2012 4:55 pm

This past weekend we had our annual Troop shooting trip at a private hunting camp near Pine Mountain, GA. All 5 boys who attempted the shooting portion of the Rifle shooting merit badge qualified.

The requirements are to shoot 3 round groups that can be covered with a quarter in 5 of the bulls on a standard A-17 50 foot small bore target. http://www.midwayusa.com/product/383280 ... age-of-100

This was the 3rd attempt for one of the boys and I was determined that he was going to do it this year. I took him to the firing line an hour early while the others were getting their safety training so we would have plenty of uninterrupted time to work on it. He has some serious vision problems but can shoot fairly good with a scope. Unfortunately the merit badge requires that iron sights be used and I don't think he ever even saw the target thru the sights on the previous years attempts. I use my Suhl Model 150 Standard .22 benchrest rifle which has duel aperture sights. I put the smallest rear aperture I had in and had him try without his glasses. Even for me. looking through that tiny hole makes everything come into focus.

After 45 minutes or so and several trips down to the target it was like the light bulb came on and he nailed it with 5 out of 6 bulls like he had been doing it all of his life.

At that point we could have packed it all up, went home, and I would have considered the trip a complete success.
