My Maltby purchase

This is a recent purchase , a '44 Maltby that has been FTR'd (no date)with a B stamp under it .

There's a stamp on the barrel which still goes unanswered as of yet but suggestions say it may have been sportered at one time and then restocked.

I'm very happy with this purchase . I took it out the day I bought it and it functioned flawlessly and "bang on" target.

With a hint from a member on another forum had me taking a closer look at the furniture and it turns out he was right ..Longbranch stocks and they appear to be a set.

A dilemina I have now is , should I put these stocks on my restocked Longbranch ( which would make it completely Longbranch )and put the beech stocks that are on my LB on the Maltby ...or should I leave things the way they are...?

Lovely rifle you've got there Timberlord, interesting markings too.

BSA didn't FTR many rifles but that looks like one of them.

The "Surrey" must be in a Canadian Surrey with the backward spelt Canada beside it, sporterising or target shooting change in its life is a possibility?

The Longbranch wood could possibly have been an FTR fit as well as a retro post sporterisation.

The fore end bnand stamp looks like VNS upside down unless the "V" really is an "A". VNS is the contractors stamp for Viners ltd Sheffield.

Me, I'd leave it like it is, thats its honest history its wearing

The Maltby will stay the way it is .Looks too good to change plus the history factor. The metal finish is an easy 90% + with a fantastic bore .I was impressed at what I could do at 50 and 100yd freestanding....just a pieplate but I nailed it every shot . I gotta bench it and see what groups it can do .

I'll keep looking for Birch Longbranch stocks.

Your Maltby had been "spoterized" at one point in it's life. The ADANAC SURREY markings are indicative of this. There was a company in Canada back in the 60's that built surplus No4s into inexpensive sporting rifles for the Canadian market. The Surrey marking denotes it as a certain level of modification, which was basically just shortened and varnished stocks. Someone has since stocked it up with Long Branch wood, which USED to be plentiful in the Great White North. I have seen 5 or six No4s so marked in the Vancouver area in the last few years. That is shoots and looks so good would mean a keeper to me. It's nice that the old war horse was returned to it's military configuration.

Well....

I sat and looked at my Longbranch in beech stocks

and

I sat looking at my Maltby in Canadian walnut.....

I had to do it...I couldn't just sit there any longer

So I switched the stocks and here's some picts.

'43 Longbranch , now 100% Canadian / LB from butt plate to bayo. I also have a choice of Canadian grooved or smooth rear handguards .

'44 Maltby in beech and primed for the range. Thats a leather cheekpiece for the M1D Garand which fits nicely without any drilling/screwing into the long length butt stock. Very comfortable
