Help for a CLLE with bad barrel?????? UPDATE!!!!!
Hello!
A good freind bouht a LSA CLLE Mk1*, mechnicaly the rifle is verry nice, even the wood looks real good, volleysights present.
But now comes the bad part, the barrel is rough and, the throat badly erroded.
In this condition shooting is hopeless, I think, but we will try it!
Is there any hope to find a replacement barrel in the UK??????
Or is the gun doomed?????
Best regards
Chris

Re: Help for a CLLE with bad barrel??????
Lets see how it shoots first Chris, you never know I've seen barrels that look crap shoot well and vice versa.
The trick seems to be that as long as there is rifling and the muzzle diameter is the narrowest along the barrels length then it should still group.
I think a replacement barrel is unlikely but who knows what might turn up.
There is a company here that cuts new barrels and profiles them as per the original however it isn't cheap but is a way of getting these rare classics back into action.

Re: Help for a CLLE with bad barrel??????
Yes, Adam, you are right.
Perhaps my friend will be here next week an I can take a look at the barrel.
I have a finn Mosin M24, the barrel looks totaly toast, but is shoots cloverleaves at 50m <!--EZCODE EMOTICON START 8o --><img src=http://www.ezboard.com/images/emoticons/nerd.gif ALT="8o">;
Do you have any contact info on tha company that makes the new barrels???
I will post some pics of the gun tomorrow.
Best regards
Chris

Re: Help for a CLLE with bad barrel??????
Find as many different batches of ammunition as you can, then try test groups. My CLLE is very worn, and shoots dinner-plate size groups at 100yds with most stuff - but with one particular batch of HXP only, it shoots a 1 1/2" group!
Nearly all CLLEs are smoothbore these days and, short of a miracle, there are no new replacement barrels left anywhere in the world - I've been trying for about 2 years to find one. It would take someone with cash & a bit of confidence to go to a barrel maker and have a batch made. I'm sure they'd sell like hot-cakes, even for a high unit price.

Re: Help for a CLLE with bad barrel??????
As for having barrels made try this...get two or three people to commit (money up front) to the barrel maker.
Back when I restored a '69 Corvette it was more 'old car' than a collectable and I needed an original part made. The company didn't want to break out old machinery and pay labor for just one part. I got two other restorers to request the piece also. The company made five, we three got ours and the other two sold quickly.

Maybe there is hope!
The barrel was derusted chemicaly and looks not that bad anymore, at least my friend told me so.
We will see, when the rifle is here.

Re: Help for a CLLE with bad barrel??????
Get some ammunition down her Chris and see how she does as Brewstop suggests.
I would try and get ammunition with flat based bullets like HXP, as they set up better in the rifling than boat tails.
BTW there is always hope.

Re: Help for a CLLE with bad barrel??????
Hi!
Update on the CLLE.
Had it here, looked at the barrel.
It is a littel rough, lands sharp, no erosion in the throat, measures .315" groove, .305" land. Should be a good shooter
All numbers match.
The bad thing is, the headspace is off, closed on a CIP NOGO.
And the rifle is not proofed. Not my friend must have the rifle proofed, but with bad headspace it will be rejected.
It will be not easy to find a new bolthead here, but we will try.
His L42A1 has also some trouble, barrel is fine(Parker Hale, hammer forged) but the mounting blocks are loose and all the screws are in bad shape, so he need replacements.

Re: Help for a CLLE with bad barrel??????
Chris,
it really depends how far of spec the head space is to be regarded as dangerous. There is a lot of overkill when talking about Enfield headspace.
Firstly do not use a SAAMI guage use a miltary one these rifles were designed to have more generous specifications.
Secondly if the headspace is not too far off, eg. excessive recoil then fireforming and neck sizing or partial full length resizing can help take up the headspace in the reloading process.
There are armourers views, correct in my opinion they should know, about the bolt head bearing on the bolt body and not on the threads so excessive head space should be seen in the light of these tolerances, thats why its better to use the military spec guages.
However I'm not sure that taking up the headspace on Long Lees can be done with a new bolt head, they need to reset the barrel in the reciever.
On the L42 I've seen three or four with similar problems, wonder in the higher pressure 7.62 NATO round had anything to do with it?
I'm copying this post to the temporary forum Chris so can you reply to it there, I wouldn't want to loose it.

Re: Help for a CLLE with bad barrel??????
Hello Adam!
The old bolthead indexes perfectly!!!!!
But my freind is not a collector, therefor his rifle has to bee proofed. And a german proofe house used CIP gauges, the NOGO has a 1.78mm thick rim, but the CLLE easy takes a 1,8mm thick gauge.
We have tryed the bolthead of my indian 2A1, it screwed right in, and looks identical. So he has to find a longer Bolthead from a No1 befor gong to the proofe house.
The Problem on the L42 may be the very heavy scope.
The rifle itself is realy heavy, recoil is low.
But on this one the barrel is very tight, 7,8mm groove, 7,57mm land, heats up real quick.
