Cutdown M1 bayonet

Things a soldier would carry other than firearms, ammo, or uniforms. Meaning equipment such as ammo pouches, bayonets, holsters, oil cans, cleaning equipment, etc.

Cutdown M1 bayonet

Post by Brass Rat » Sat Oct 08, 2005 10:26 pm

Here is a bayonet I picked up off ebay a year or so ago. It was originally a 10" bayonet that has been cut down to 6 1/2" and reground to the M5A1 profile . The reason I wanted this one is that it also had the cutdown scabbard with it.

Joe, I don't have alot of info on it.

In 1954 the army went to the 7" M5 bayonet and M8A1 scabbard for the M1, it is my understanding that these were modified in Korea for the ROK army.

There are no markings on it, the original manufacturers marks having been ground off in the process of recontouring the blade. I'm not even sure if it was originallt an M1 or perhaps a 1905 that had first been cut down to 10".

I really have not learned much more about it. This was the first one that I saw that included a cut down scabbard so I jumped on it.

I also have an M5A1 that was modified for use on an M1 carbine. The Koreans didn't let much go to waste.
