Re: THE FIRST WORLD WAR THREAD.
Interesting photos. Thought provoking. One description says that 1968 was the only year since WWII that the British military didn't have any casualties. In 1968 the US had lots of casualties in Vietnam. 16899.. the most of any year of the Vietnam war.
In the US Walmart is promoting people installing a green light bulb so it can be seen outside of their homes to show appreciation and support for veterans on Veterans Day. Blue light specials at Kmart come to mind. Maybe if Kmart had used a green light they wouldn't be about out of business now days.

Stern Rule .. Conscription... in England. And don't bother to hide with an exemption that won't pass scrutiny.

Now here's a problem that was becoming evident a hundred years ago in the newspapers. The British nobility were being killed off in battle and some titles were likely to go away because of the male inheritance thing and families running out of males. In the US, where nobody is noble, the moneyed classes just keep their sons out of war by one means or the other....at least after WWII. A protracted stay in Europe during the Vietnam war was a good way, or pulling some political strings was always good too.

The British might have had to "nag" and shame young men to get them in the Army but the French conscripted their replacements in "classes" and started reaching into future age groups to fill up the ranks.

Re: THE FIRST WORLD WAR THREAD.
After various things happening...like a Dupont plant having a large explosion and various other things that seem to be in favor of Germany...in neutral America... Wilson has had enough and makes a speech about the population with ties to foreign countries. Some of this rings a bell today doesn't it?
A hundred years ago in the newspaper.

You can't fix Stupid, but you can occasionally head it off before it hurts something.

Rand Paul thinks we have to band travel from a list of Muslim countries but without going as far as Trump on surveillance of American Muslims. But trump is getting the most flack because he seems to have the lead in the Republican group of low caliber candidates. However.... What Wilson got around to doing was pass some laws that have been brought back today to put some people in jail who used the internet...which was something that didn't exist as even an idea back a hundred years ago.
The Sedition Act of 1918 (Pub.L. 65–150, 40 Stat. 553, enacted May 16, 1918) was an Act of the United States Congress that extended the Espionage Act of 1917 to cover a broader range of offenses, notably speech and the expression of opinion that cast the government or the war effort in a negative light or interfered with the sale of government bonds.[1]
It forbade the use of "disloyal, profane, scurrilous, or abusive language" about the United States government, its flag, or its armed forces or that caused others to view the American government or its institutions with contempt. Those convicted under the act generally received sentences of imprisonment for five to 20 years.[2]

Here's and an idea for a Constitutional amendment from a hundred years ago today that didn't get very far.
