And I thought Pep Boys was a US auto parts and tire store. Wonder when they gave up dressing up their employees in Zouave uniforms?

US is on the pot and straining to deliver. And then an idea by the Mayor of New York aimed at the ethnically German citizens to show he is concentrating on the task at hand and straining with the rest of right thinking Americans. The loyal Germans weren't having anything to do with it though.

William Jennings Bryan, the Bernie Sanders of his day, tries to throw his monkey wrench into the on rushing machine of war. And.. since he was born in 1860, and 57 years old, that part about doing a citizen's duty wasn't going to be going down to the recruiting office and signing up.

Wilson made his speech. But... today Senator LaFollette, of the gang of twelve, throws a turd in the war party punch bowl. Senate is put off until tomorrow to declare war by procedure rule insisted upon by "Herr" La Follette. One newspaper headline looks like we are going to war with the allies. Maybe it should read "U.S. to join the allies" and not fight with them. Whatever.... everybody knew what it meant.

Not everyone was enthusiastic for war. One man made a statement at a pacifist rally that he sent to Senator LaFollette to read to Congressional record.

This particular Frank Stephens was a sort of early hippie besides being a pacifist. Later his son got a 9 month sentence in jail for refusing to register for service. Frank himself almost went to prison for being in violation of the Espionage Act. However, the jury found him innocent.
