Re: THE FIRST WORLD WAR THREAD.
Princeton was going to take Wilson's name off of a building recently because he was a segregationist a hundred years ago. Wilson was the president of the university before he became President of the US. Then they changed their mind since the building had been named after him for a long time and he did win the Nobel Prize for Peace.
Maybe they should name one for Obama to even things up....he was President and got a Prize for Peace too for an equally unjustified reason. Obama bombed more countries than Wilson and produced no peace and Wilson did help end the first World War and helped to engineer the peace that produced the next world war....... but his high minded peace notion, the League of Nations, was nice, but totally worthless and non functional.
And, Vern, I'm also looking forward to what Burns does with the Vietnam war.

Re: THE FIRST WORLD WAR THREAD.
The last chapter of the PBS show was a downer for American life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Wilson ended a man with wrecked health and an unswerving notion of his own God directed infallibility that prevented all compromise. The US Congress wouldn't approve joining his crowning glory League of Nations as a result. And prejudice, lynchings, and riots intensified against black people as well as prosecution of people of German and Austrian heritage. And big brother was now watching those who failed to tow the political line from then on. And America assumed a major role in world affairs from then on....making the world "safe for Democracy".

And so it begins. The press is controlled by an appointed government overseer and his committee and the Press is all in favor. And the same committee is also in charge of "publicity" ...or propaganda.. depending on how you look at it. And it isn't Wilson's idea... his cabinet made him do it.

William Jennings Bryan visited the President and gave up being a Peace advocate. He joined up with the War effort, and vowed his full support. He plans now to preach for increased agricultural production....but wants no booze to be made from any of grain crop. He still strongly believes in prohibition. It's like he has given up on his firm belief in Santa Claus but still maintains full faith in the Easter Bunny.

Re: THE FIRST WORLD WAR THREAD.
On the 52nd anniversary of the assassination of Lincoln there was a small article on page two of one Washington paper. In the headline on the front page... and taking up most of the front page.... was an impassioned plea by Wilson. It was a scare the crap out of them speech and time to getting all Americans ready for dedicating themselves to war.

British censor warns America not to get too carried away with managing the news to keep bad news away from the American people about the war.

Re: THE FIRST WORLD WAR THREAD.
Wilson is attempting to push through Congress his version of the Draft to get his Army built to size for the kind of slaughter going on in the Great war. Meanwhile... some men are proposing marriage to any women that would have them...thinking married men would be exempt from the draft. But... not so fast. No "slacker" is going to get away with it.
