Info needed on No8 sights

I already have this on the military trainers forum but it has been suggested I post it here.

Looking at a 5 series PH sight for my No8. Now I believe the correct designation is PH5D as opposed to the PH5C for the No4. The major difference I believe was the PH5C is 1/2 minute adjustments and the PH5D is 1/4 adjustments.

The one I am looking at is marked PH5DC. Is that how they were marked ?

Also (from memory, as I don't have my references with me) a PH5D has a slightly different mounting system to the PH5C. I believe the forward mount is longer, located more centrally to the body of the sight and uses a purpose drilled mounting hole rather than the ejector screw hole that the Ph5C does. The one I am looking at uses the ejector screw hole.

So are there two versions of this sight ? A PH5DC with a PH5C mounting system + 1/4 minute adjustments and a PH5D with the alternative mounting system + 1/4 minute adjustment ? Or am I loooking at a fake ?

One last question, the scale plate for windage is missing (not sure on the terminology there) are they findable or rocking horse manure ?

I habve the PH5D on my No8Mk1, because it does not have a ejector screw(not even the hole drilled!!!!!) and this was teh only PH sight taht would fit.

A PH5DC sits on my No7Mk1, and would also fir a No8Mk1 with a ejector screw.

From timt to time there are some incomplete PH sights on Ebay.

Chris, thanks for the info. What I'm really interested in is the specifications of the PH5DC, does it have 1/2 minute or 1/4 minute adjustments ? If 1/4 minute I would consider buying but if it's only 1/2 minute I will wait until a PH5D comes along.

My No8 actually has both the ejector and the purpose drilled hole.

if 1/2 or 1/4 is mainly determined by the adjusting wheels, my PH5DC has the bigger wheels, so i has 1/4.

But i sa one on Ebay with the smaller wheels some time back.

Thanks again chris, believe its one with the bigger wheels therefore with 1/4 minute adjustments. However because of the missing scale I think I will pass on it. Thanks again.

I do not have a site in front of me at this moment but I believe you can tell the differance between 1/2 and 1/4 minute sights by the number of serrations under the wheel, the 1/2 minute sight having only four serrations?

I'm happy to be corrected on this but the advice came from AJ Parkers.

I would grab it, even with the missing plate.

Spares should be possible to get a fultons or AJP in Birmingham.

I will look at my PH sights this evening, how many clicks there are on the big and small wheels.

On Ebay there is a seller names "bulliongold", he has often sights and spare parts for sale, he lives near bisley, I think.

Just dragged the .22s out.

On My No8 is a PH5D, small wheels, 10 clicks per 1 turn, according to the scale 20 per 10MOA.

The No7Mk1 has a PH5DC on, large wheels, 20 click per turn, but a much finer pitch on the heigth screw so it ha 1/8 MOA according to the scale.

Two things do detremine the fineness, clicks on the wheel and the pitch of the screw.

Somewhere I have notes on the real adjustment values for each rifle, if I remember correcly, the steps on the No8 were actually fner than 1/2 MOA.
