#5 question

Post by Brass Rat » Fri Feb 24, 2006 9:36 pm

Has anyone here tried their #5's at 600 yards?

The furthest I've tried is 200 yards

I've shot one in a number of matches at 200 yards with different lots of ammo. The groups were not that good, and I saw no reason to shoot it further.

I have been shooting mine at 200, in fact, the only match that I have won and my highest score at Camp Perry were both done with my '46 BSA but we will be shooting at 600 yards next month.

It's not a match just a fun shoot to see if you can put it on the paper at that range.

I am trying to get Bob to shoot a 20" AR with 75gn Hornady BTHP's but he wants to use his #5.

Long range with a No5...

Post by brewstop » Mon Feb 27, 2006 9:14 am

I did try once at 1000yds.... I only got 2 out of 7 shots on the screen (a 2 and a 1, I think) and the wind was quite variable, so I didn't persist!

The No5 had a No4 rearsight, and I was "on" at about three clicks under 1000x on the scale. I was using RG55 cordite, which I find to be very closely calibrated to the Mk1 sight on a No4.

By way of comparison, on the day I was also using a No4 Mk2, and this was giving reasonably consistent 2's to 5's with the occasional "V".

I have a different, scoped, No5 which gives a reasonable 12" group at 400 yds. I think most No5s can give quite decent accuracy, so long as their stocking-up is correct.

I've tried the No5 at the longer distances, for fun mainly.

The projectile is accurate enough from the No 5 at 600 yrds.

Its the poor sight picture for the distance with relatively crude foresight element and large aperture, the shorter sight radius also mitigates against accuracy as well as the lightness of the rifle none of which helps accurate shooting.

You should be able to hold the balck at 400 yrds if the wind is kind, beyond that I wouldn't be dissappointed to get the odd one outside the black.

It certainly is fun and challenging though.

Thanks Adam, we'll just leave the scope on his #5 for this shoot.

We have a 200 yard vintage bolt match the first weekend of May and I think we will both use my BSA since it has the iron sights on it already

He runs me out of .303 every time we go to the range now.

He does not, however, like the full power 174gn SMK loads. Fortunately he won't have to shoot many of them in the 600 yard shoot.

He may change his mind and go with the mouse gun once he tries out the #5 from a prone position.
