The Great MAH Spring KISS Competition, POST YOUR SCORES HERE

Post by dromia » Wed Feb 22, 2006 8:05 am

This is where you should post your scores along with pictures of the shot card and the rifle used.

Good luck!

Rifle: 1898 Springfield Krag-Jorgenson .30-40

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/0603/ ... genson.jpg[/pic]

Ammo: Handloaded 220 gr Hornady RN, 40 gr H-4350, Winchester LR primers and Winchester brass. OAL 3.000"

Score: 79.0 :|

Not too bad for the first time out in nearly six months. A bit disappointed in the load. The bullet is correct in weight and size for the military load, but I kept the velocity down to around 1900-2000 fps. The original load of 2200 fps involves pressure that is a bit stout for the old action. Have had better results previously with the Hornady 180 gr RN.

Hey sarge, have you tried loading up something a little more modern for the Krag, like, say some 168gn SMK's

First enry goes to AJ however I think he's done himself a disservice here.

AJ with outward scoring I make that card an 85.

Got to be better than a 79.

I know this is suppposed to be a KISS competition just didn't factor in the limitations of the nouveaux hillbillies.

Metal Mouse, I have tried spitzer rounds in the Krag before, but the gun was designed for those long round-nosed bullets. The longer bearing surface that they have should provide for a better grip on the rifling. I think that I just need to tinker with the load. Part of the problem yesterday may have been that I was freezing my arse off. I was shooting into a brisk wind blowing down from Canada across the Great Lakes.

Adam, thanks for correcting my scoring error. I tried my best counting the score, even used my hillbilly calculator, fingers and toes. The six point boost is appreciated, but the pattern of hits still sucks. No consistency.

Hell no, MM. I tack 'em to the old couch on the front porch. Some days, when she ain't usin' it, I tape my targets to Ma's clothes washer. That way I do not have to kick my ole coon dawg off his favorite nappin' spot. The outhouse is breezy enuff without me puttin' more holes in it.

This is our best range for shooting cards, so I'm going geared up to break my duck.

Weather outlook is gloomy though, being up in the hills the forecast is sleet, snow and freezing temperatures, hope me hole is dry.

Still we shall endeavour to persevere and there should be some targets tomorrow.

I'll be testing the Trapdoor tomorrow so provided I get something half decent load wise, old possum puckerer AJ and myself can get the Trapdoor challenge under way.

Mind you now the forelock philandering pitmatic pronouncer has gone all primitive I'd better establish that by a Trapdoor he does mean a breechloading Springfield and not some outdoor faeces disposer.
