.45-70 Crimp

Post by SgtJethro » Mon Mar 20, 2006 10:44 am

Adam, my ole bilge bobber.

A very slight yet snug taper crimp is all that I use. Just enough to keep the bullet in place while it is sitting nose down in the cartridge case on the way to the range. Some old Trapdoor shooters that I talked to told me once that, with BP, they were just finger seating the bullet and using no crimp at all. One guy even loaded the bullet in the chamber that then followed that with a wadded charged cartridge.

I recall reading somewhere, possibly in the Wolfe book, not to use the Lee .45-70 crimp die. I don't I first seat the bullets with my RCBS Cowboy Action seating die. The I raise the seater plug and crimp in a separate operation. This is the advice that I picked up from the Sierra reloading manual.

The .45-70 brass over here is easy to get and cost about $18 per 50. What are they going for over their the Bastard Blairville?

Personally, I really like the 5744. I have shot the BP, but I hate the mess it makes, with both the rifle and the brass. You really have to scrub both right after shooting. The 5744 seems to give me the easiest loading (no filler/wad) and consistent performance. I just need to find the right load.

On the BP, are you using magnum or regular primers. I believe that magnum primers are recommended for the BP to give it better ignition. Be careful using magnum primers with 5744. In fact, don't. I think that I belled the chamber on my .43 Spanish roller that way. :(

.45-70 Crimping

Post by SgtJethro » Mon Mar 20, 2006 9:36 pm

Found my copy of the Wolfe book on BP loading for the .45-70 Trapdoor. It does state that you should not to use the Lee Factory Crimp Die to crimp lead cast rounds for this rifle. The factory crimp die is designed for use on jacketed bullets. You can use the Lee seating die for the crimping operation, however, this should be performed as a separate operation following the seating of the bullet. The Lee seating die will provide a proper taper crimp.

Rules Question for His Emenseness

Post by SgtJethro » Thu Mar 30, 2006 6:00 pm

Adam, ole farthing frolicer, I have a question.

Can I count a Finnish M91 as separate from an Russian M91 for this match?

Can I shoot and submit scores for multiple weapons of the same type, e.g., two different K98k?

Damn !!!

Post by SgtJethro » Sat Apr 08, 2006 11:01 am

Just received a letter from my new sportsman's club. Our range is going to be closed to all shooting from April 15 to May 15. The state is stocking trout in the stream that curls behind our target line. That is really going to put a crimp in my shooting for the Great KISS Match. Why can't those bastards go fishing in the aquarium tanks down at Petsmart? I don't see that there is much difference.

By the way, what is everyone else's excuse? Have you all gone and joined the Kennedy-Blair Anti-Gun Conspiracy?

What do you mean your range is closed AJ.

I thought that you were out in the wilds and ranges were for poofs.

Just slash and burn a 100yrd clearing in your primative wilderness and get on with it.

Multiple entries of the same type of rifle are ok, its just only one entry with each individual rifle.

One serial number one entry.

I've got two good range days before the comp closes so should have some more entries myself.

Don't know where the rest of the buggers are though.

The skill and high scores of the hard core thats posted already must have put them of, bloody wimps!

Come on fellows get some range time and post a few scores to make it interesting.

You miserable buggers might even enjoy it

Hi Robert,

Did you used to shoot at Cawdor?

If the Fort George option comes off let me know the range dates, I'd like to shoot there if you have any guest days.

Good luck mate.

Yes Adam we used to use Cawdor range but as I said it is now run by a bunch of wan$erswho frown on anything other than Target rifles , Not much fun using enfields if the only way to shoot is "prone" even at 100 yards.

I will e mail a list of dates for Fort George when I get them and you will be more than welcome to join us.

OK the closing deadline is now well and truly past, so I wiil be getting the scores and prizes fettled by next weekend.

A big thankyou to all of you that bothered to take part, its the shooting that counts.

All these old dears that we own, love and cherish deserve an airing occasionalyand these "competitions" are a perfect way of trying them out.

The scores also show that they are capable of good shooting although we all have to work harder with the classic rifles to get high scores. That for me is the great challenge of these wonderful rifles.

If I want high scores then all I need to have is lots of money and some skill and I'll shoot "F" class.

Look out for the summer league coming here soon.
