PH5A fitting

I've just had a PH5A turn up today, and have tried to put in onto my MkIII*. however, unlike the earlier version I have, the windage arm doesn't sit straight across the barrel, and the mounting bracket seems very thick. I know people talk about cutting relief into the wood, but the wood doesn't seem to conflict, and its purely how it lies on the wrist.

any suggestions as to why/ what to do about it?

Are you sure that you've got the safety bits off and aligned properly, if you know what I mean.

I've put some photos on below. the top views have a cleaning rod to give an idea of the bore line, and the front views to show how each sits. the sight I'm using for comparison is a Parker +5 according to whats on it; the folding target sight. they're both held on by the safety screw and the trigger screw. I have got the spring, but its too long at the moment, and I haven't gotten round to shortening it.

Sometimes you need to put a little washer or shim on the trigger guard screw, or some electrical tape between the sight and the butt socket - by using either/ both of these methods you can get the sight vertical and/or rotate the sight across the axis. This seems to work for all SMLEs and earlier actions, the only exception being some Ishapore rifles where the cheek of the stock is very fat.

The problem could be the spring if its the wrong one or not in it could cause the sight to cant.

The spring acts as a tensioner.

sometimes you will get this as the receiver was not gauged very closely at this point (it didn't have to be). Shim made of beer can or cardboard between the base and the receiver may be needed.

And of course, someone will need to empty all those beer cans, in order to be able to make those shims!
