Story of Saturday.

Got there for 8am, shot tthe speed steel with my Winchester 94 in .357, Laura shot it with our 10/22.

Did ok for first time, her fastest time was 3.04 seconds :D Mine 5.06 :D

Then off to do the McQueen. Borrowed her Steyr Tactical Elite as my Enforcer was being rebarrelled, and shot a 47, Laura shot 38 so pretty good for her too..

Wandered around the arms fair, bought a stock for the ruger and very nearly spent a lot on an old rook gun Laura liked :-D

Picked up my Enforcer with it's new barrel.

It's been rebarrelled with a Shultz and Larson barrel by Craig Whitsey in Arundel, and Bob Burbridge of Arundel classic arms brought it up for me, which was kind of him. We had out No.5 off him so he knows us, and I've got my name down for one of 4 No4(T)s that he's just imported from the US

Had lunch at the City rifle club with a couple of the guys from our local club in Port Talbot who'd come for the arms fair, then off to Century 100 for the .303 1-300 yds.

It was a bit grey, but not too bad, shot the 100yds and then back to 200, but we were sharing with the long range pistollers and others, so a 2 hour wait to shoot the 200yds as they had 3 guns each and were taking their own sweet time about things.. It annoyed us somewhat and put a downer on the afternoon.

Still eventually shot and back to the 300yds where the grey clouds decided they'd had enough and it poured down on us. Thank god I'd packed waterproofs it was hammering down, we got soaked. So shot the last detail really quick as it was so bad...

So wet, tired and a bit fed up with the long waiting we decided to go home, of course as we were driving through Bisley village the sun came out and it was blue skies all the way home

Anyhoo look what arrived in the post today

Ellen took some pictures but I haven't had time to get them of the camera yet.

As per usual shot good and bad.

50 meter precision was a waste of time as it took me two cards to get onto the target, when I did the groups were good but I never got them down far enough to be centred on the black.

50 meters is not a distance that I normally shoot at so I had no sight settings to start with which is the key to this target shooting lark, as I have said quite a few times before.

So obviously I've not heeded my own advice.

On to the .303" any rifle competition, here I used a BSA 1912 SMLE NO1 Mk111.

The ammunition was issued as part of the competition and was Sellier & Belliot which I have never used before.

Shot the 800, 900 and 1000 yrd competion first AM, which was a good thing as the rain in the afternoon cancelled the long range shooting as the targets were invisible.

Wind was medium veering from 7-9 o clock with 5-7 clicks to the left on my PH 5A aperture sight, it only caught me once, at 1000 yrds, when it dropped to a stand still and my shot scored a 1 at 9-o-clock to the left.

The course of fire was 4 compulsory non convertible sighters followed by 15 shots to count maximum score at each distance being 75.15 for an overall total of 225.45.

my scores were as follows:

800 yrds - 66.6

900 yrds - 67.3

1000 yrds - 59.1

Total score 192.10 ex 225.45

This was not only good enough to get me a gold standard award it was also good enough to win me the match.

That was based on the 800 and 900 yrd scores as the 1000 yrd scores weren't counted as some competitors couldn't shoot the 1000 yrd leg due to the weather.

The only thing I still need to check out with the organisers is if they will still be recording record scores as my total score beat the previous record set in 2004 of 174.4.

On the medium range 400, 500 and 600 yrds I did OK but should have done better as I shoot these ranges more often and my scores were down on my average.

Here you only get 2 sighters with 10 to count. The lack of sighters really made a difference with unknown ammo, with me loosing some points before I properly got on.

400 yrd - 40.2

500 yrd - 46 (thats more like it)

600 yrd - 39 (pathetic)

total 124.2 ex 150.30

The weather wasn't all that good with slashing rain at all distances and the same cross wind but thats just excuses.

Still I came second in the medium range and got silver standard missing gold by just 1 point and first place winner only being 4 points ahead.

So a good weekend overall with me being pleased with my long range scores, proud of my rifle and pleasantly surprised with S&B ammunition.

Well I've been on to the Range Master about the record scoring issue and he's come back saying that they won't be recorded for this year as some people didn't shoot the 1000 yrd bit.

This is the Range Masters original reply:

"Hi Adam

Standards and medals will be in the post. Well your not going to like me
now as Range Master for the Phoenix I pulled the 1000 yard because of the weather conditions. so everyone had only the 2 score to count, to make it even, this being the case no records would be placed for this years Phoenix this coming for stat's, you may now get the doll out and stick pins in me for punishment.

john"

I didn't think that that was very fair (Hey! I know life isn't fair) so I sent him this reply:

"Hi John,

I have to confess that I am disappointed in that response.

People in your position have a duty to make decisions and when that happens some people may be disappointed.

However the test of a sound decision is whether people can see the logic behind it even if they do not like it.

I fully understand why the 1000yrd score was pulled from the competition because if not we would have had much less of a competition, by going with the 800 and 900 yrd scores only everyone could be competitively compared.

To me this logic does not hold for the record score however as it is not competitive in itself, it is a record of the highest score shot in that particular discipline and as such sets a standard to go for and beat, thus stimulating more competition in future years. I assume, though I do not know, that it will have some bearing on setting par for gold, silver and bronze standards?

Certainly all competitors did not get the chance to put up a record score with some being unable to shoot the 1000 yrd leg, but those of us who did, did so in real competition and it is an actual score, for record purposes that score should stand (perhaps with a context caveat) so as to give recognition to the shooter for that particular achievement.

I am not arguing this from my position alone as I do not know if my score is a record score and perhaps if the 1000 yrd scores were taken into account the medal positions might have been different. I am arguing this from a position of sportsmanship and fairness and to encourage better shooting at these long ranges with the .303". Based on my score alone, which is what I know, then the existing record was handsomely exceeded and if my score was beaten then so much the better.

Not to record this achievement does a disservice not only to the shooter concerned but also the discipline and future competitors.

I have said my piece as in conscience I felt I was duty bound to do so.

You will no doubt have your own counsel on this but please give my views some consideration.

Thank you for your time.

Regards

Adam Sutherland"

No response as yet.

What will be will be, I've never regrettted anything I've said but I have sometimes regretted not saying what I thought. :D

Still haven't got my medals yet though
