Dave a wise man would try all kinds of shotguns, SxS, O&U, Pump & auto to see what suits you best.

Like in all things fashion is strong in shooting and many follow the herd.

No doubt the top clay shooters use O&U, no doubt they are good but how much of this is historically market driven? Who knows?

For ordinary day to day shooting use what fits you and what you feel confident with.

I'm no great clay shot but when I used to shoot more regularly my average for a 40 bird shoot was 35 with a SxS and 30 with an O&U, that was based on shooting a season of each. I can do almost as well as the SxS with a auto Remmy 1100 or a Browning, in fact I'm looking for an original Browning 2 shot auto just now.

Now maybe if I'd got a fitted O&U my average would have gone up, but clay shooting doesn't excite me enough to spend all that money.

Gun fit and confidence is the key to successful shooting, regardless of weapon. If you believe that a O&U is the only way to go then you'll never have confidence in any other type of gun and you'll shoot better with the O&U, all other things being equal.

So don't listen to dogma try them all, then the gun you end up with will be the one that suits you.

Hell I do most of my clay shooting with muzzle loaders on sporting clays now, I haven't seen a O&U muzzle loader yet and the top shots there all get top scores with SxSs. The courses of fire aren't easy either.

Go figure that.

I attended a skeet shoot locally with my side by side and although all the others used O/U most of them canted the guns almost sideways to allow better follow through with the second barrel.

Looked like poseurs to me. Get a gun that fits and you will do alright, £50 spent on lessons is well spent and you can walk away knowing an awful lot more.

Dromia, York Guns have a Browning 2 shot. It is the steel action and has a plain barrel. There a couple more on Guntrader.

I had a look at it once but didn't examine it closely. It is used but then it will be getting on a bit as it is probably from the 1960s. I have a steel action one and an alloy action Twelvette. I went to look at a Twentyweight at a local dealer before Christmas. They had sold the thing the day before I got there

It had a spare barrel as well.

I do have a very nice 28 bore beretta, its like shooting a .410 with the down range effects of a 20 bore. A great gun and all I have used on Pheasants this year as all my other guns were on loan to guests.

Our little shoot is developing well and we will put more pheasants to wood this year and build a new pen. I will be starting a formal syndicate based on about £250 for 4 days shooting and 2 days work plus all the squirrel and pigeon you can shoot.

Went clay busting again to day did OK at down the line but failed badly at sporting I need more practice and I need a shot gun.

Have to get a certificate first that may take awhile with my local plod.

Oh dear here we go again the thought of dealing with them again is enough to depress me.

You missed a cracking day out at Cowpark today to go shotgun shooting FFS.

It only snowed a bit anyway!!!

I had to be chased away from there today after all the PANDA`s pissed off early.

Here I can buy them on my Shooting License - as many as I like
