CLAY BUSTING

Post by dhtaxi » Sun Feb 10, 2008 10:33 am

A guy I work with took me clay shooting today.

Iv only ever fired a shot gun once before.

He started me off on down the line then we moved onto skeet.

He then introduced me to the sporting clay layout its a hell of a facility they have got and I will be going back soon.

All in all a great day out.

A question for you how do you go on buying cartridges do you have to have shot gun certificate to purchase them is it the same as a firearm certificate were you have authority to aquire and hold a certain amount.

At the shoot I just paid for what Id used at the end of the day plus the clays.

I think I need a 12g over and under.

Most clay layouts will sell for use on the day in the same way that a rifle club can, a co terminus SGC is very easy to get if you already have an FAC. there is no limit to number or calibre of guns that you can buy as long as you can secure them.

Now Dave don't get yourself all confused there, you don't want one of those over and under abominations, they are just down right unnatural, especially for sporting clays.

Now repeat after me:

Dave needs a side by side.

and again:

Dave needs a side by side.

and again:

Dave needs a side by side.

now on your own you'll soon get the hang of it. :D

Mind you if you still want one of those newfangled abortions I might have a couple to interest you. ;)

You'll need a shotgun (or a shitgun if its an over and under) certificate mind.

Hello Cleveland firearms section, hope your not in a hurry Dave.[/i]

Dromia,

Do I gather that,in your view, the proper "National" shotgun for an Englishman,is the side by side?

dhtaxi,

Take Adam's advice, start out with a side by side. If you later feel that you need to lower your standards :) then by all means do so, however having once felt the elegance of a good s-by-s you will never feel really comfortable with any thing else unless it be a well balanced single.

Interesting that more and more makers are offering new s-by-s guns.

I recently handled a Turkish 'Yildiz' in .410 ga. and am seriously thinking of getting one.

You have confused me now not difficult to do of course but I didn't see one side by side at the shooting ground and there was quite a few there they all used over and unders.

Looks like another learning curve to go through.

Me thinks a couple milsurps might have to go the journey to fund this but we will see.

It will take months to get a shot gun cert from my local authority anyway.

In the mean time I will just enjoy the shooting

Take no notice of the Side by Side lot D, you need a Side by Side like a hole in the head for clay shooting. Look for and buy a comfortable Over & Under - you will know when you pick one up if it is right or not.

Side by Sides are for walking around with, under your arm so you look rich. Over and Under's are the mutznutz if you are claybustin

I can shoot clays with a sxs but I can't hunt with one

give me my old mossberg pump and I can do both and do them well.

Just keep shooting we'll worry about it when the smoke clears.
