In January 1939 at the age of 14 he started his apprenticeship at the Royal Small Arms Factory Enfield which was just north of London during that time he had to do ARP duties after work , a different life to most teenagers these days .
His brother was in the Royal Marines at the age of 22 in 1942 was killed during a seaborne attack of Tobruk .
During his child hood he never saw much of his Father as he had signed up for the Royal Navy in 1914 and served for 22 years so had spent many years away from home .
To me he was a font of information as he always seemed to know so much , a quiet man never boastful just got on with it type .
