Pedersoli Alamo

Hello all,

Bought this Pedersoli Alamo in cal .45 a couple of weeks ago in Germany.
I took it to the range twice and it shoots just great (just a bit low).
I’m still testing different loads and patches.
Tomorrow I’ll take it to the range again and instead of a .445 roundball I will try a .440 roundball, 0,25mm and 0,31mm patches and BP loads from 42 up to 45 grains.
The powder I use is German Wano PP.
I’ll let you know how the rifle performed tomorrow evening.

I really like Pedersoli guns, they are so well finished compared to Ardesa and historically accurate too...............

Went to the range last Sunday.
The rifle shoots great, groups are good but it shoots way too low (about 20 cm).

In stead of increasing the load I will decrease it.
I tried loads from 42 up to 46 grains of Wano PP.
Coming Sunday I will try loads from 33 up to 38 grains of Wano PP.

I had the same problem with the Ardesa Hawken Woodsman.
I went down from 40 to 26 grains of Pyrodex P.
I hope it works.
If not I will start working on the front sight.

Well that's the fun of working up a load with BP
I took my P58 Enfield out last Tuesday and it was shooting a whole target high at 50mtrs. Problem is that the sights only start at 100 mtrs so it is load testing time for me too..........
I was shooting 54 grn of 3F under a 470 grn Minie bullet. Minimum recommended by Pedersoli is 45 grn and a Maximum of 80 grn.
Think I will drop the load to 48 grn and see what happens...............

You are right Duncan.
It is fun working up a load with BP.
Been to the range today.
I tried one load(35 grains of Wano PP), 2 different patches (0.010” and 0.012”) and 2 different bullets (.440 and .445)

Point of Aim was the yellow circle on the top target
Point of Impact was on the lower target in one of the circles.

Yellow circle:
35 grains of Wano PP
0.010”patch
.445 roundball

White circle:
35 grains of Wano PP
0.012” patch
.445 roundball

Pink circle:
35 grains of Wano PP
0.010” patch
.440 roundball



The difference between POA and POI was about 25 cm (10”)
When I increase the load the POI stays about the same.
Last week I used loads up to 49 grains.
Result was that the groups got bigger.
What I want to do now is adapting the front sight.
The groups at 50 meters are very good using 35 grains of BP, a 0.010” patch and a .445 roundball so I want to stay with that load.
New tests next week.

Interesting Martin, as a point of interest, do you weigh your bullets before you shoot?
I 'batch' my rounds before I shoot and any that are 5 grains or more from my average load are re-cycled.

This is my target from last Tuesday, as you can see, even using a rest I am not doing too well yet.

I did weigh my bullets at first, but I found out that the difference was not more than 2 or 3 grains.
I don’t cast them myself but buy them in Germany (H&N).
For now I’ll just keep working up a load.
I just love these muzzle loaders, it’s a fantastic hobby.

Took the Pedersoli Alamo to the range again today.
Instead of WANO-PP BP I used a Czech BP called Explosia.
I instantly noticed the difference in recoil.
The German WANO BP kicks a bit harder compared to the Czech Explosia BP.
The Czech BP also leaves a bit more dirt in the barrel compared to the German BP.
Cleaning after every second shot took care of that problem.

I used 36 grains of Explosia and results were very good.
Groups are excellent, but POI is still about 10cm to low.
Next range time is in about 2 weeks.
I will adapt the front sight and file just a bit more off.

What a fantastic rifle

Maybe the shots are low because you aren't using enough powder. A 36 grain load in a 45 pistol is plenty but in a rifle it isn't. Here is a for instance load comparison for a 45 cal caplock rifle from a book by Sam Fadala.
