A No5 for me

Post by PeterN2 » Mon Oct 10, 2005 4:48 pm

I did a deal tonight with a fellow club member and am now the owner of a BSA No.5 rifle. It is dated 1945 serial number BG15xx. It looks in OK condition with a bright bore with plenty of rifling. Hardly any dings in the stock. My friend sold it because he is left handed and he found it very awkward to operate. The bolt has quite a strong spring and he found it very difficult reaching over to close the bolt with his left hand. He has a .303 Martini-Metford Express rifle that he was going to sell but changed his mind. That is much easier to use left handed. I would have bought the Martini if he was selling that. It was made by Webley in about 1895 and marked with the retailer, Locke, Calcutta.

Pictures of the No.5 to follow at the weekend.

Regards

Peter.

Sounds as though you've done well there Peter, I'd hang around that express rifle like bad smell though, he'll give in eventually

A few pics of the No.5

Post by PeterN2 » Sun Oct 16, 2005 6:30 pm

I had my new No.5 at the range today. It shot quite well at 200 yards. Mostly inners and bulls (with a few magpies) on the 300 yard NRA target. I was using 1981 South African surplus ammunition. I am well pleased with this rifle. The markings (No5 Mk1) on the left of the action are very faint, as is the serial number on the left butt socket. They only show if you have the light right. The wood finish is a liitle worn on the right side which I presume is from the rifle being carried slung alot. It is marked 'England' on the action so was sold abroad at some time. The dealer my friend bought it from told him it had come from Canada. It has a O bolthead. A few pics.

Nice rifle.

Now that I have one of both types, I think I like the ones without the metal cap on the stock better.

You know the more we talk about No.5's

I have two also and really like them as fun shooters. You know the more we talk about them the more those that don't have one will want one and...... the supply has mostly dried up.

Thanks Joe but...

...I will be going down to Bisley on Friday for the Trafalgar meeting. Adam invited me to a shoot at Catterick on 3rd September but sods law intervened on that date as I was picking up the kids from my sister near Kendal that day after they had been there for a week. I am open to any other dates though, provided wife and family don't intervene.
