I spent three weeks on HMS Forth once, sailing from Singapore to Hong Kong and back at a steady 10 knots pace. Half way there they had a live fire exercise with the 40mm Bofors guns. They tied some 45 gallon drums together and threw them overboard as a target. If you looked closely from behind and to one side, the projectile was visible in flight. The first sighting shot was way high and you could see the little black blob fly away. I think they only hit the target once which gave a nice orange and black ball of flame and smoke. I don't think the projectile would be visible from the angle in that photo though. I wonder what the shutter speed was?

The post that I got it from mentioned that the photo was between the gas exiting the muzzle and igniting. That's quick.

Standing behind most any howitzer and firing a fairly low quadrant, you can see the projectile going down range, but not for long.

The shadow of the muzzle flash on the deck is also captured as solid, as Peter says that must have been a fast shutter speed timed to the firing. .22 rimfires are easy to see going down range from the shooters perspective.

Bren and Vickers fire, on a sunny day and from a bit off to one side and back, was a golden arc reflecting the sunlight.

One of my dutes was searching out enemy flashes (I was a flash observer) on a perminate OP. At night, the flashes can be noticed for miles, and our survey instraments can zero in on the enemy location.

Once you hear the rounds going over your head you'll never forget; ofcourse, when the mortors land neer by it's diffenatly gets your attention.
