It's been a Smith & Wesson-y kind of year...w/pix

This forum is for all other rifles and hand guns that we have an interest in. They need not be of military origin nor C&R.

It's been a Smith & Wesson-y kind of year...w/pix

Post by ThePitbullofLove » Wed Dec 28, 2005 2:51 pm

Prior to this year, June actually, I had owned a single revolver.

In 1995, I bought a Colt Detective Special at a local show for $285 NIB. I carried it for about a year, then traded it in on a 1911.

Then in June, something happened. I shot a friend's Victory Model Smith at a vintage shoot and decided I wanted one in .38 Special.

The next week, I was at a local pawn shot, when the owner showed me a 1950's dated M&P, and sold her to me for a song. I didn't have my permit with me, so I came back the following day and while filling out my paperwork, he showed me a mint Model 19-3 that genuinely looked unfired. So this one went on layaway.

2 Smiths...hm.

Then a friend mentioned he wanted to get rid of his Model 1917. Knowing it would probably be costly, I inquired anyway, and to my sruprise he wanted to trade it for an Enfield #4 and $100. So he got my Aim Savage Indian rework (a tack driver) and a Ben Franklin, and I got his 1917. $180 invested.

Later that week I picked up my 19-3, so now I had 3 Smiths in the house...

The next month, I came across a 1937 .45 acp from the Brazilian contract in great shape, so it came home with me too...

4 now...

Finally, on Christmas day, a little brother for my Model 19. My parent sbought me a 19-4 with a 2.5" bbl.

6 months, 5 Smith & Wessons...is this typical? They're multiplying quickly....[:D]

Very nice but unfortunately I can only look. The powers that be will trust me with any amount of rifles but would lock me up for ten years if they found me with one of those.

You NEEED one of these S@W`s in .455 Phil, just to expand your collection a leeeeeetle further ;)

This one belongs to a friend of mine, and is held under the section 7.3 rules and regulations here in the UK.

@ Dave, have you ever thought about the section 7.3 or 7.1 options ? A .455 Wobbley would be a nice addition to your collection ;)

A webbley or any handgun would be nice but I dont know whats involved with 7.3 or 7.1 except that the guns have to be kept at a secure approved site and you cannot take them away with you. If I understand the legislation correctly you can only shoot it if supervised. My licencing authority are not very forthcoming with info. You will have to explain whats involved next time we are at the range.

I dont suppose its cheap either with the cost of secure storage membership etc.

I have a Webley Mk IV on a 7.1 licence and it's just another part of my FAC (no extra cost, but then the variation happened at the time of Bliar's 'Disarming Act' of '97) - I have no special security other than that existing before the change in the law.

The restrictions are that the weapon(s) must be part of a collection*, that you are not allowed ammunition for the piece and it can only be moved from it's holding place by prior (written) permission - the 7.1 is for collection only (no shooting allowed). I'm not sure what the restrictions on a 7.3 are, other than the weapon must be kept in secure storage at a range.

Dave i will send you some bumf on section 7.

7.1 is the best option, as Tom says at least you get to keep it at home.

I wish i had gotten my Mk IV on 7.1 instead of 7.3.

Well, being one of the "brain drain from the 60s" I am able to take advantage of a C&R Permit in Pennsylvania and so far have amassed, and shoot, four MkVIs (three cut for 0.45 ACP, one uncut, one of the last commercial ones made in the 1930s), four MKIVs (.38 S&W), one pre-Victory in 0.38 S&W and one 1916 S&W Hand Ejector II in 0.455 with the factory letter. Great fun and if anyone ever gets Stateside around Philadelphia, let me know. Dave_n
