Milsurp After Hours

I have several Enfields, III"s, IV's and even a 5 carbine. Love to shoot them, even reload for them. Also have a few Swiss K-31's..Those are real 'one-holers', just a little more expensive to shoot.

See people who think Mauser's or 'Noisy-Maggots' are better. Is there something wrong with these people? I can't see why I'd want to start collecting anything other than English or Swiss; well I do like Czech CZ-52's also.

What do you think?

I own 5 or 6 Mausers but the only one I have fired in the past couple of years is my 1916 short rifle in 7x57 and I have only shot one of my Mosins in at least 2 years , that was an M39 I used in a match a few months ago and did really badly.

The only rifles I really regularly shoot anymore, in no particular order are

1) Danish Issue VAR barrel M1

2) BSA #5

3) Fazakerely #5

4) S-C 1903A3

5) 20" HBAR AR15

6) STG-58 on Imbel receiver

Get a 1903A3 from CMP and you will see what improved sights will do for the Mauser design. Mausers and Nagants, in my opinion, were excellent designs for the time in which they were created.

I think most, probably all kinds of milsurp rifles, can be very good shooters depending on the shooter's eye sight and understanding of the particular weapons sight design and distance setup. For instance, the Finn Nagants get a better press than the unmodified Russian Nagants... but they have slightly improved sights and a modified trigger pull too. The chamber, the bolt, the rate of twist, the ammo....hardly a difference from what the Russian M91 or 91/30.

Being the moderator here on the Enfield forum and an active prosletyzing champion of the best battle rifle ever designed and produced I have to agree with you.

Regarding Swiss, well I've never really gone down that route so cannot comment but they are very nice rifles.

My secondary interest are mainly .22" trainers and Martinis, Swedes, and early Breech Loading BP cartridge rifles.

I do think that this thread would be worth copying to the Noisy Moisy and the Mangy Mouser forums though, so as to get a fully balanced view on this.

Adam, old swabber of honey pots, you must be talking about the M1 Garand. Surely you are not talking about one of those archaic bolt jobs.

I have grown up shooting the Nagant rifles and pistols and they are simple and robust. I do however in my limited amount of expirence with other nations rifles have found the Enfield to be delightful to shoot. perhaps it is the rimmed cartridge but the rifles have all been flawless in operation and accuracy.
