California Rarebirds

Post by joseyclosey » Sun May 14, 2006 11:05 am

The Planes of Fame Airshow 2006 is held at Chino, California next weekend (May 20-21) and two very rare warbirds will be flying there.

Both are the only flying examples in the world, The Boeing P-26A "Peashooter" and the Republic AT-12A Guardsman.

The P-26 was the firstmonoplane fighter produced for the USAAC, as well as the first modern all metal fighter to enter production.

The AT-12 was originally built as a Seversky 2PA-204A fighter bomber for a Royal Swedish Air Force export contract but were barred from delivery due to the war in Europe and so were impressed into service with the USAAF in early 1940.

Russian born Seversky changed the name of his company from the Seversky Aircraft Corporation to Republic Aviation in October 1939.

Planes of Fame

Post by Niner Delta » Sun May 14, 2006 9:58 pm

From 1980 to 1994 I lived about 25 miles from the Chino airport where Planes of Fame is located. Every year I went to the airshow and it was always the best warbird show in the US. Try to imagine a flyby of B-17, B-24, B-25, C-47, (plus more I can't remember), in formation being escorted by just about every US WWII fighter there was. One of the very few things I miss about California.
