Help identifing a mauser

Post by HammodGW » Fri Aug 11, 2006 7:33 pm

ok a few years past i was taking a small town gunsmithing course and baught a Turkish Mauser from the teacher as a project. anyway i never went mutch to the class since he really didnt teach gunsmithing he just made you do the non technical work. and so i now have a turk with out a receiver do to him keeping it. I know that the bolt is a M98 bolt and is in excellent shape. but other then that i cant tell if it is a GEW98 or if its a (LRSSM) Large ring small shank mauser. I dont think it is a 1903 or a M38 and i cant remeber what markings where on the receiver. Is there anyway to get another receiver if it is a LRSSM? cause i dont think the 1903 will fit. any help would be Greatly appreciated. Jeremy

I have one of each of the main long rifle Turks, plus a K98 that was owned by Turkey. If nobody answers between now and Sunday, I'll measure and photograph each bolt. But as far as Turks are concerned, buying a complete rifle will be a lot cheaper than trying to put one back together again. After all......at one juncture you could have bought some of them for 4 for $100. Mine were "good" with bayonet and ammo pouches, and shipped free at $50 each.

That would be most apreciated. i know mine is a M98 bolt cause it cocks on the open and it looks identical to a M98. i found my barrel today and after about 4 years under some scrap in my dads garage it is badly pitted and not safe to fire. i was told the rifle had cosmeline all over it but now that the pitting has accured, and not remember ing it being there before, i think it must have been something alot more caustic or something used to hide the pitting of the barrel when it was sold...... SO her are my thoughts since i know this is a 98 bolt and i am pretty sure the Turks only changed the barrels and recievers on the old rifles. I am thinking about just getting an M98 barrel and receiver and using them? what do you guys think?

Took some pictures and measurements on my Turks. My observations are that the 1893 with the cock on closing bolt is the intermediate bolt. The 1903, while cocking on opening, is still slightly shorter than the 1938 or the GEW98. Not scientific measurement....1903 is 5.010 to the rear locking lug. The 1938 and GEW is 5.210 to the rear locking lug.

The large probablilty is that you have an old Century import. Look at the barrel just ahead of the nose cap. It will tell you what model you have at that point if it was imported by Century.

the barrel is to badly pitted to see any marks. the entire side of the rear sight is toast aswell. i am positive it is either a 38 or a GEW98. so i guess i will just buy a large ring receiver and barrel and use them.

That should work. Looks to me like only the 1893 is a small ring.
