17HMR

Post by ajcarey » Sat Sep 18, 2004 5:39 pm

I had read quite a bit about the 17HMR as a high-speed varmit round with a flat trajectory and good accuracy out to about 200 yards. When I saw this rifle in the store on sale I just had to pick up and try it out.

It is a Savage Model 93R17-FVSS with a synthetic stock and a heavy stainless steel heavy barrel. I have always preferred wood stocks for their looks, but this synthetic stuff is durable and not prone to warp.

The rifle has a 21 inch heavy barrel with a recessed crown. The twist rate is 1:9. It is clip-fed (5 rounds) and bolt operated. One nice feature is that it comes with scope mounts already installed. I wish more rifles hit the shelves like that.

The scope is a cheapie $60 BSA Sweet 17 specifically designed for the 17HMR. The elevation knob is calibrated for the trajectory of the 17HMR and is graduated so that you can easily adjust it when needed. The windage adjustment is of the traditional type.

As far as accuracy is concerned, the 17MHR is great. Dime sized groups at 100 yards are routine unless you have a royal case of the shakes or are trying to shoot through hurricane force winds.

The 17 is a mighty small bullet but it packs a hell of a whallop. I shot a gallon can full of water with it at 100 yards. The can literally jumped in the air and exploded. There was a miniscule entry hole in the front side of the can. There was no back side. What it lacks in size, it more than makes up for in velocity and will surely get the attention of a groundhog-sized varmit.
