”M1 for Vets Project” is a grass-roots program aimed at thanking our wounded Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, Marines and Coast Guardsmen for their service and sacrifice in the Global War on Terrorism. Rifles are presented to veterans who wish to pursue the shooting sports or collecting as part of their rehabilitation.
This project was founded by John JJ O’Shea, an avid collector and competitive shooter. JJ was looking for a way to honor our wounded veterans and hit upon the idea to purchase rifles from the Civilian Marksmanship Program, get them refurbished and then present them personally to the veterans.
This project is currently administered through the Lake Norman High Power Club in Cornelius, NC and works with other agencies such as the Walter Reed Society Veterans of Foreign Wars Wounded Warriors, USMC Scout Sniper Association and Operation Second Chance. The names of the interested veterans are forwarded to the project where they are placed on a list and presentations are made as the rifles become available.
What started as a small, personal gesture by JJ has since developed into a nationwide program and since November 2005 has presented 51 rifles with 8 more being made ready for presentation. There has been numerous clubs throughout the country that has raised funds, build rifles and present them as part of the project. Donations have ranged from $1 to $500 in which all donations go to buying more rifles. Over half were complete rifles, the other half being parts and such that were purchased from the CMP and then put together into complete weapons, re-finished and then made presentable.
I thought as a Veteran of the War in Iraq and as I saw many wounded Vets over there that I could help out in this very worthwhile project and have.
