Now, about Indian rifles.................

The Indians don't put numbers on rifles. They just pick up the rifle after they scalp the cowboys and chase off the cattle. Then they round up brass tacks and pound them into the stocks. I guess you don't get to see many 'cowboy and indian' movies.

I think the reason they used our numbering system was that Japan was at the time most of the firearms bieng built was begining to have Westen Civilization Influence and if they wanted to be part of the "Great Empires" such as Great Britian, France, and others realized that they needed to use our numbering system and incorperated it into thier weapon serial number and rear sights.

As for the designation of the weapon itself Kanji was used along with the Cyrsanthumum as this was symbol of the Emperor and as the Japanese soldier believed that the weapon was issued by the Emperor himself thus Kanji was used.

I have a friend on the west coast that is Japanese and a Japanese collector and he told me that the reason for the mum on the rifles was to impress the peasent soldiers that they had diety in their hands and make them fight harder. The mum is not on anything but rufles. Sounds reasonable. riceone.

This is from page 14 of the WorldWide Arms Ltd Spring 2007 catalogue which caught my eye as it says that these weapons have Hindi numbers on the rear sights.

On another point, and a question for UK shooters, the description says Antique Obsolete Caliber - Fully Working - No Licence Required
