Battleship Alabama's 16 inch guns

Post by Niner » Fri Oct 19, 2007 10:49 am

Crawling into one of these things is an experience. Makes you wonder what the sound could have been like when it fired. However there is a utube showing of the firing of 16 inch guns that doesn't look all that bad. It's of the USS Wisconsin.

From deep down in the ship

The shells and powder charges are hoisted up through the thick circle of steel ,called the barbett, that the gun rides upon and that also contains all the gun munitions down deep into the ship.

Projectiles fill in the space on a floor inside two concentic circles of walls. A vertical lift clasps them and lifts them to the guns. This is above the level of powder storage.
