In the 1913 "Accountability Manual" an MG troop is authorized only 4 guns.
I do not have access to a mid-1930's manual but I count 6 packs in the troop pictured with possibly more out of view.
In October of 1930 BAR's were supposed to have been replaced by air-cooled BMG's (but they were still in service in the mid-30's with the 4th)
also,in theory,a regiment was supposed to have 690 men of all ranks.
One source(Gregory J.W. Urwin) says that,"At war-strength a horse outfit could now bring sixteen water cooled and fourtyeight air-cooled machine-guns and 624 Springfield rifles to bear on an advancing adversary!"
It would seem logical that WW1 would have caused an increase in MG numbers. But I am having trouble getting the math to work out altho I s'pose a between the wars backwater post such as Ft. Meade could be assumed to be quite under strength.
One thing I have learned from my Dad's pics.....PUT CAPTIONS ON THE BACK OR SOMEPLACE!! The more info the better! He didn't do it very often and it makes it tough to figure some stuff out.
Before he passed away I asked my Stepdad (he had served in the 4th with my Dad) to go thru and put what info he could on these pictures,he was able to provide a bit more but he remembered the names of more horses than men!
