This rifle had two threaded plugs in the side of the receiver when I bought it so I handed it off to a gunsmith friend to remove them with his drill press and mount a scope mount base for me.
I've had this rifle for a few years now, I just recently restocked it. I wasn't very pleased with the job I did inletting for the scope I just never got around to this project until recently.
The inletted portion of the stock. Again I feel I could have done a little better, but it is far nicer than my last attempt... there was a nasty gap with the last one because I cut too much on the first cut.
A shot of the mounting screws inside the action.
The stock this rifle came with was a postwar replacement. It had the pressed in brass sling slot escutcheons and no arsenal marks.
The replacement stock is an early/mid war which coincides with the production date of the rifle. It has a bare sling slot at the rear and a brass slot liner at the front. There is an Izhevsk stamp on the right side above the rear sling slot.
The buttplate has a lined-out serial with the correct one stamped above it, certainly because the stock was not original. I swapped it to the new stock to keep the serials matching.
A couple comparisons with my SVT-40. I put the unblued bolt carrier back in the SVT as that is the issue-correct appearance. Personally I still like the appearance with the blued bolt carrier.
I want to refinish this stock but clear shellac doesn't quite match the original color. Does anyone know if amber is a dark enough color or if I'll need to try the garnet shellac flakes I've heard some folks mention?
