Survival Rifle.
Here is a survival rifle made by Harrington & Richardson for issue to Army Air Corps pilots in the second world war.
It is a magazine fed bolt action rifle chambered in 22 Hornet.

Re: Survival Rifle.
What did they call that- the M4?
Interesting muzzle device. Flash suppressor? Too small for a sound suppressor (that would do anything).
USAF survival rifles always were kinda neat to me. I've never had any though, except for an ArmaLite AR-7. A guy was talking about giving me a Springfield M6, but he moved away before we could get together so could look at it. Rats.

Re: Survival Rifle.
I have always been puzzled by these "survival rifles", the US made ones always seemed to be crudely made ones-the one pictured looks like one assembled from one of these "make your own firearms" books, 22 Hornet might be a perfectly respectable cartridge but I suspect there wasn't much 22 Hornet ammunition manufactured in WWII and isn't good for much larger than a rabbit or a woodchuck. The Luftwaffe issued their crews a drilling, usually made by J.P. Sauer and Son. IFired a freind's AR-7 years ago, not that easy to shoot. An interesting thing to have but I don't think I'd want to depend on it.
I have a lot of the .22 Hornet ammo
WW II era ammo, apparently issued with the rifles. I don't have one of the survival rifles, but I have shot a lot of the ammo through a Walther KKJ. It shoots very well.
The US military asked domestic manufacturers to make up all sorts of odd ammo for them during WW II, including FMJ .22 LR. The domestic manufacturers did as asked.
