Another Georgia brain fart.

Post by Brass Rat » Wed Jun 29, 2005 9:57 pm

This is the sort of thing that I come up with after working 14 hours then coming home to step in one of the gifts that my daughters puppy left on the carpet for me.

I have a 1926 Oviedo Model 1916 short rifle in the original 7x57 that for all intents and purposes is a smooth bore.

22" correctly contoured 7x57 barrels are just about non existant. What is available are 23.5" Model 1938 Swede barrels in 6.5x55.

It should drop in with little if any modification to the rest of the rifle. Same preasure range and nearly identical case dimentions.

This could work and would be one hell of a small rifle tied off to a back pack or in a saddle scabbard.

Any Ideas?

Hey, I like that idea, especially as I am faced with exactly the same problem with the same model rifle. My only other recourse would be to find 7mm shotgun ammo.

Case dimensions...not close enough to work in this scenario. The swede 6,5 case is wider in case body dimension at the shoulder and the actual diameter of the base at the rim is greater. What this boils down to is the guide rails machined into the bottom of the magazine opening will not match twhat is needed on the swede case to ensure proper and reliable feedign form the magazine. The same feed problems occur on 7,92 mausers rebarreled to 7,62x51 if these rails are not machined to match the 7,62's case profile for reliable feed.

On top of it all I don't feel spanish made mausers are quite up to snuff on quality for a more powerful cartridge.
socialism sucks...that's a fact.

Another thought to toss out on the table

Post by Brass Rat » Fri Sep 09, 2005 6:32 pm

The original barrel seems to be in OK shape until the last couple of inches before the muzzle, then it seems to have been worn smooth by a cleaning rod. At first I thought it might have been counterbored but its just worn.

The 1916 short rifle and 1916 carbine as far as I can tell differ in only two areas, the length of the barrel and the nose cap.

I wonder what would be the feasibility of having the barrel cut back to 19" and recrowned. The hard part would be finding the nose cap.

I have a feeling that a nose cap from any of the full stock carbines could be made to work which might make finding one a bit easier.

Is the barrel lenght 23", so you cauld cut ~2" and use the origional stock?

Can you post a pict. of the mil surp?

Thanx Dante'

Fred at Low Tech told me he could do that without too much trouble, I may end up sending it over to him, I just hate having a non shooter sitting around.

My 2nd 1916 was delivered to the house today, I will post some pics of both this weekend.

I have a couple of Brownell's front sight blanks on the way so I can zero them at 100 yards.
