FIREARMS ACT 1996 - SCHEDULE 1 [NSW]

13
A firearm capable of discharging by any means:

(a) any irritant matter in liquid, powder, gas or chemical form, or
(b) any pyrotechnic flare or dye, or
(c) any article known as a “paint-ball”.
(a) It would be possible to construe this as meaning any firearm, black powder smoke is a definite irritant and cordite was renowned for giving people headaches.
(b) Tracer bullets could be pyrotechnics and spotting rounds could contain dye.
(c) The famous artist Pro Hart, of Broken Hill, was well known for firing paint at some of his canvases from an old 12 ga. shotgun.

Pro Hart eventually had to get a Licence for his "Paint-firing" cannon, under the pre-1996 Acts. How it was classed ( "artist's tools" or what) I don't know..
