Mick (ICC) sent me these pictures for you to identify the items, just to let us know he hasn't forgotten about us.





Seems its a tad wet this weather in his corner of Arizona.

The bottom left item is a ventometer, an instrument for lining the sight bar with a white line to aid amount of aim deflection for windage. The botton right item is a combined vernier and ventometer for windage and elevation adjustment. These were in use up until about 1912 when the windage adjustable sight came into use.


The top left ia maybe a rear sight protector? The top right maybe an elevation scale that fits around a rear sight?

Good on you! Now, just how early do they go? Could they be used on a Martini-Henry for instance, or possibly a MLE. Are they interchangable between various patterns? Thanks.

According to Edna Parkers book on sights, these ventometers and verniers were in use from the 1860s, so they would have been used on Martini-Henry rifles and the Long Lees. I don't know if there were different patterns for different rifles. I will have look it up when I get home as I am at work now.

I have just received further information from the 'old man in the barn'. The bigger of the two ventometers is marked, W. Gregory & Sons, London. The bigger of the two sight covers is marked, M-H (Martini-Henry) Patent 2843. The smaller sight cover is marked, Patent 8446, M-H ( as above)or LM.


BTW,he is offering these items for sale. No price because he does not recall what he paid for them.

I have one marked "Jeffery" with the complete address, but it is a Lee one - not a Martini one. As to the other one, I keep forgetting - will have to check... Brought 6 of them from SA last visit, and arranged good homes for 4 of them.

This is the first time I have seen any of these appertances. I would think that there were originally designed for the volunteers/NRA, as I do not believe that they would have been a regular item of issue. Way to easy to lose, and they would most likely be a chargable item. I may just get on for myself. Does anybody use the ventometers in comp in competition, and are there any instruction as to their proper use?

These verniers and ventometers were used by target shooters on the ranges at Wimbledon and, later, Bisley and, I suppose, elsewhere. They are a target shooting accessory to get a proper measurable allowance for windage and elevation. There are instructions for their use in the book by Edna Parker, A Century os Sights and Sighting Aids. The print is a bit small to scan and post on here.
