C-47s

Post by Niner Delta » Tue Feb 22, 2011 5:44 pm

Was out the other day driving the back roads through some aircraft junkyards and these old
Navy C-47s caught my eye.
So if you need any parts for your plane, just let me know.

Theres still a lot of them flying. I love to watch them land with a bit of headwind. You'd swear they were flying backwards.

Anyone got any pictures of them fitted with jet engines?

Anyone got any pictures of them fitted with jet engines?
Now why would someone want to do that ?

This is probably as close as you will get, a turbine powered DC-3. A company in the US does the conversion.

Those Navy birds are Not C 47s, they are R4Ds.
I like the C 47, I've got about 12 jumps from one.
A C 47/DC 3 just doesn't look natural with turbos!

Oops, you're correct Sarge, the Navy didn't call them C-47's.
But this company that makes model airplanes didn't get it right either.

I agree with everyone about the turbines just look wrong, like putting chrome wheels on a Model-T.
But the turbines are more reliable, economical, and powerful than the radials.

Apparently Rolls-Royce used a DC3 to test various small jet engines and the story was that a passenger jet was approaching England and the Co-Pilot noticed a familiar plane many thousands of feet above them. He looked twice then asked the Skipper to have a look, he did so and asked
"What can you see?"
"A DC 3"

So being sure that they weren't seeing things they asked what was above them and got the cheery reply that it was a DC3 and the explanation that it was a test-plane fitted with jet engines, hence the height at which no DC3 had any hope of being.
Read it in some aircraft magazine at the doctor's once.
