I'd have been flat on the ground, no good running

The fuse shouldn't have armed...not enough force to arm it. It is an internal safety built into it to prevent a 'short' round from taking out the gun crew. We had a 'short' round one time hit one of the gun crew in the leg. It just bruised him.
But you are right, flat on the ground is best. I had one hit about 15ft from me. I was flat on the ground. Had a ringing in my ear, but the shrapnel all went over me...that time.

Re: I wonder why....
We know that a mortar blows upwards in a cone shape when coming almost straight down, but what would the blast shape be if it were lying on it's side?
One night while still with the artillery, the VC dropped mortars on our battery at the same time they hit one of the infantry units, they needed fire support so we fired the 105's on our hands and knees (trust me, not easy) during the mortar attack because we were afraid to stand up.

Peace is that brief, quiet moment in history.......... when everybody stands around reloading.
