First bunch of Aussies I met (in a bar) were impossible to identify. Their language didn't sound like anything I had ever heard. Eventually it bugged me enough to ask, hoping that one of them would speak something I could understand. The answer, "Srayn, mite" eventually translated into Australian, mate. This cost me a round of beers, but it was a valuable lesson.

They are not a bad bunch when you get to drink with them and they almost speak English - a bit like you guys in the other colonies

They were good company. And they had Australian beer. The Australian enlisted men could not buy hard liquor without written permission from an officer. We worked a deal where I got a whole case of good Aussi beer in exchange for a lousy quart of cheap PX rum. They thought they were getting a steal of a deal. I knew I was.

The Australians also carried Browning High Powers. This was my first chance to use one. Had to find my own ammo as theirs was all controlled!
