I wish I COULD come!

Post by Brian the Brit » Thu Feb 23, 2006 3:12 pm

I was only joking, Guys, but thanks for the very kind offer. I'd love to meet up with you all one day to make some smells and noise and possibly to do some shooting too. Perhaps I could arrange it to coincide with a trip to see Mum in East Yorkshire?

I'm on duty as RCO at our club range on Saturday and have a couple of mates dying to get their hands on my Martini-Henry. I've been faffing around this morning experimenting with paper case liners to reduce the powder capacity of CBC brass from 110 to 85 grains without using fillers. I'll make five or so up tomorrow to have a play with.

Adam, I enjoyed your post on your adventures with BP cartridge loading. When I get the Sharps I'll be picking your brains re 45/90 loading. I notice that Quigley used paper patched bullets in his 45/110. That's the way to go.

It has only just occurred to me but the original Martini-Henry "Long chamber" round rejected in favour of Mr Eley's "Short chamber Boxer-Henry" cartridge must have been almost identical to the 45/90. Does anyone have any further details?

Boxer-Hnery long chamber....

Post by belgmart » Fri Feb 24, 2006 5:04 am

Would rather be something like a 45-120 more or less - it really was a very long round! It was actually more or less continued as the .45 - 3 1/4" Express.... 45-90 is rather small compared to that round.

Long Chamber round

Post by Brian the Brit » Fri Feb 24, 2006 7:26 am

Thanks, Gert.

I'd simply assumed that as the powder charge was only 85 grains then the case overall length would have been similar to the Sharps that contained 90 grains.

What I hadn't considered was the length of the bullet used and the dimensions of the wad column.

And the coiled case too - it did contain quite a bit less powder than the later drawn case.

Post by PeterN2 » Fri Feb 24, 2006 12:56 pm

If it is OK, I can make it to Catterick tomorrow. What distance are you shooting at and can I have directions to the range from the A1?

Regards

Peter.

Peter,

I've emailed you my home number for some directions, ring me before 9pm if you can. I'm picking Graeme up at the airport 10.15.

Where're the pictures?

Question: How do you have a few pints of beer afterward and still clean your rifles as you should? Or does it matter?
