Beer as a barrel cleaner

Post by Brian the Brit » Sun Feb 26, 2006 5:07 am

Beer, with a little prior preparation, is of course a first class black powder solvent.

Just pass it through the kidneys and it's ready for use.

Well, what a day, first our range was double booked and the army were in situ. Luckily our Secretary saved the day by arranging for us to share a 100m range with another civvie club, so we got some shooting in after all.

I met and greeted Woftam, totally failed to recognise Peter n2 even when he said good morning, sorry Peter my apologies.

Peter brought a fantastic selection of Arisakas, Berthier and Mannlicher rifles which he kindly allowed me to shoot.

Woftam got in some serious shooting with a fine selection firearms, and inspected the "Enfield Man`s" array of Enfields laid out for perusal.

Heres some of my pics, unfortunately my group photo shots were blurry so hopefully Adam got some decent ones to post.

Woftam was really taken with my Martini Enfield.

I gave the Berthier a whirl, it has quite a kick!

I really enjoyed my day at Catterick ranges meeting Joe and Woftam and the other shooters there. Dromia I had met before at Bisley, but it was due to him (and the prompt from Joe) that I was invited to go and found out where I was going. The fry up for lunch was very welcome, as the wind on the range was freezing and you needed something warm to help thaw out . I got to shoot a few rifles I had not shot before such as a L42, SMLE sniper, Martini Enfield and a Long Lee Enfield. A few pics.

The range we shot on.

Woftam enjoyed himself.

Woftam and Dromia sending rounds downrange.

Woftam shooting a SMLE with an optical sight, the name of which escapes me. I had a go with this rifle as well. An interesting experience.

Joeseyclosey has a shoot with my Arisaka and M95 Mannlicher.

A couple of poor pictures of some of the Enfields we had to look at and, in some cases, shoot with.

Thanks again to all who made this possible. A thank you to the 'Enfield guru' who let me examine and shoot some Enfields I would never have a chance to look at or shoot otherwise.

Regards

Peter.

Joe, that looks suspiciously like a 1907 sling on that CLLE.

I see the picture with Wolftam and Dromia and that Wolftam is shooting the French MAS. Those rifles aren't nearly as bad as some make them out to be.

Galilean sights maybe??

Post by belgmart » Mon Feb 27, 2006 2:38 am

Those odd optics mounted on the SMLE... You can see this type of sight still in use actually on Stickledown, on modern LR match rifles...

I believe that's for a category where scopes aren't allowed. Nice!

I'm struck as to how many Enfield eras were represented...more like a live fire museum. It's a shame a gathering like this can't happen internationally.

How did y'all like shooting the L42? Mine is a ton of fun! I would've loved to try those optical sights on the SMLE. Anyway, thanks for the pics, I really enjoyed them.

Regards, Brad
