However I would argue that it is an icon of Britain and the commonwealth rather than England.
The acton was designed by a Scot and as a military arm it was used by many other than the english.
Still I suppose when you are the only one of the 4 Kingdoms that is cultrurally uncertain of your identity then these sites are necessary, sad really.
